Eddie Howe admitted Newcastle have issues to “iron out” but declared their USA pre-season training camp as “high class.”

‌A late comeback left his squad heading for a day off in New York with smiles on their faces. Two goals from Elliot Anderson clinched a late win, as United’s kids turned around a deficit.‌ The intense heat at Newcastle ’s Atlanta training base, into the 90Fs, meant that training exercises that were easy in Newcastle, became really tough.

‌The squad have returned to training fit after following individual programmes in the summer - Howe says the fittest ever. But Howe now wants two weeks of intensity back home.

They drew 1-1 with Chelsea with a near first team, and 3-3 with Aston Villa.‌ Howe said: “It has been really good for us. Facilities and opposition has been high class and brilliant organisation. Players have been committed we are united and fitter.

”It is a key 2 weeks now iron out a few things. We have not done much training in the last 5 days. You're used to your rhythm and habits when home so it will be good to get back to those routines we are used to.

”The travelling is tiring but I have to credit the players for dealing with that with no fuss. There is a lot of noise. It's the polar opposite to Austria, which was very quiet. We could control things but here we have been following a schedule where we don't really have a choice of what we do.

”But there are pros and cons, the games this year have been such a big test for us and I think that will then speed up our ability to perform early season. We are going to have to start fast looking at our fixture list. These games have really helped us do that.”

Nick Pope 8

Back in action after surgery on his knuckles and back to top level, with key saves against Chelsea.

‌Martin Dubravka 7

Got in some assured minutes, but will he want to stay as a No2. Loan move is an option.

Loris Karius 4

Signed a one year contract to stay after his unlikely Carabao Cup final appearance and could end up No2.

‌Kieran Trippier 6

Returned early for pre-season, earlier than the other internationals. Like many hasn’t looked zippy, but used the trip to integrate new boys into the team

‌Harrison Ashby 4

Not ready. Was ordered to sprint harder when tracking back during a training drill. Outpaced by Mitoma of Brighton which cost a goal. Must be loaned out to develop.

‌Javier Manquillo 5

Got a half against Villa but could be vulnerable to a new right sided defender being loaned in during August.

‌Matt Targett 7

Will get more minutes this season, 69 minutes versus Villa and more against Brighton. Solid as a left back, less so as wing back. Will be pressured by the possible arrival of Tino Livramento, and Dan Burn.

Dan Burn 8

First choice left back and key man, as befitting his improved contract. A half against Villa and full game against Chelsea means he’s up to speed. 7

‌Paul Dummett 5

New deal to stay for the season. Plugging a home grown hole in the squad but hasn’t shown he’s ready to push the starters.

‌Sven Botman 6

Game and a half for the Dutch centre back. Was slow on the turn when defence was opened up for Chelsea’s Nico WIlliams to score. 6

‌Fabian Schar 5

Slight injury worry after limping off against Chelsea after 33 minutes. Newcastle’s next position to strengthen in right side defence, but remains vital with his passing.

‌Jamaal Lascelles 6

Boosted by Eddie Howe who confirmed he will remain as club skipper despite not playing regularly. Could yet seek regular football elsewhere, but would be a miss in the players’ leadership group.

‌Bruno Guimaraes 7

Wants a new deal to match his role in the Toon revival and played against Brighton looking like he’s getting back up to speed, wand showed good aggression against Brighton

‌Sandro Tonali 6

Being eased in gently. Ticked the ball around well, with some probing balls. After being bulldozed out of the way by Emi Buendia in the opening game needs to prove he can adjust to the pace and physicality and intensity that was United’s trademark last season.

‌Lewis Miley 8

The big breakthrough star of the Summer Series for Newcastle. Just 17, he was excellent against Chelsea and Howe will keep him around this season and guarantee him minutes. One of the best kids he’s seen.

Matt Ritchie 6

Now a stalwart, and given a one year deal to stick around. One of Howe’s leaders off the pitch and showed his usual tenacity against Brighton, but part of a midfield struggling to get out of their half.

‌Elliot Anderson 9

Another winner from this trip. This could be a big season for Anderson. Looks ready physically for more of a chance and did well against Villa. Scored three including dragging the team back to life against Brighton.

‌Sean Longstaff 4

A worry that he’s injured and hasn’t played or trained fully. United miss his energy on the right of midfield. Can he get a game in before the kick off?

‌Joe Willock 4

Still recovering from a hamstring injury suffered last season. Like Longstaff, his running power is a miss, but he’s been training and isn’t far away.

Joelinton 7

Rested against Brighton but a game and a half, and looks his usual reliable self, big strong and indestructible. Arrived late after visa troubles.

‌Jacob Murphy 6

Needs to step up and really challenge Miguel Amiron with more forceful performances.

‌Miguel Almiron 7

Delivered one of the best moments of the Series, by scoring in Atlanta, where he won the MLS, against Chelsea. Got a hero's welcome back there. Goal bodes well for a repeat of his streak early last season.

‌Harvey Barnes 6

Signed as the tour kicked off and flew in to a welcome from his new teammates. Spoke well about the new season and demands of Newcastle, and showed typical directness against Brighton.

‌Anthony Gordon 8

Another big winner. Proving versatile on the left wing and as a No9, and was sprightly during the Villa and Chelsea games, including assisting Almiron’s goal.

‌Alexander Isak 7

Reeled off some tricks against Chelsea and played No9 and left wing. Early days but looks like he’ll be sharp enough come the Aston Villa game. Scored

Callum Wilson 6

Was isolated against Brighton and had no service but scored against Villa. Physically looks strong and quick and ready for business.

‌‌Mentioned in dispatches:

The Toon kids here will never forget the turnaround they conjured against Brighton.

Remi Savage, Jay Turner-Cooke, Alex Murphy, Ben Parkinson and another of the Miley, older brother Jamie, showed fight and spark to help Elliot Anderson to a brace.
